Following the untimely passing of Edwina Barton, Deanwoods first Lady Captain, last year, the ladies section along with a collection of former members & friends of Edwina congregated to celebrate her life.
32 players braved the cold for a 9 hole stableford event in which all the competitors used a pink ball. This was Edwinas ball of choice and the balls on this occassion were supplied by Sue Hill, twice former Lady Captain and close friend of Edwina. Marjorie Follows was the winner of the evnt with 21 points but only following a countback from Sue Boultwood. 3 players all scored 19 points but 3rd place went to Sian Soanes who had a better countback score than Julie Myall and Lyn Pell.
Following the golf everyone gathered around Edwina's Tree which is a flowering red chestnut and is planted by the 9th green. A plaque was unveiled by Edwina's step daughter Anna and a poem "My Favourite Place" was read by Brenda Aggutter. Sandwhiches, cake and much reminiscing then followed in the clubhouse all of which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. A fitting tribute to a founder member and very much missed friend of the club.
A copy of the poem and some pictures of the day..............
My Favourite Place
Sitting on a well-worn chair
Autumn sunlight warms the air
Thinking in my favourite place
Golden rays encase my face
As the year begins to cool
Berries rich as orbs of jewel
Drip their colour upon the ground
To lay with leaves of red and brown
Sitting on this well-worn chair
Drinking in the morning air
Like the flaming chestnut tree
For just a moment I am free
